![]() ![]() To say that the Unconsecrated were the only arbiters of chaos would be misreading the symbolism. Mary stands on the edge of that chaos by accepting a role in the Cathedral (another religious motif) where she encounters the chaos of community one person at a time. When chaos interrupts, people die and the whole community is threatened. ![]() The Unconsecrated, whose name begs a religious question, stand in for primordial chaos, and the goal of the community is therefore to establish borders (the fences) and to monitor them for breaches. In this novel, participation within one's community becomes more than an enjoyment-it is now an absolute necessity for survival.
