I will say that there were a few things that weren't exactly clear to me (e.g. The world that Pulley develops is also impressively mystical (I would definitely class this book as magical realism). I found the plot legitimately compelling-it took me a bit to get into the book, but after that I did legitimately want to know what would happen. As the two journey into uncharted territory in Peru, accompanied by a native priest as their (evidently very unwilling) guide, the regions that they encounter quickly grow increasingly mystical. Loosely under the auspices of the EIC, he and an old colleague head to Peru in an attempt to smuggle out some chichona trees, which are a source of the valuable antimalarial quinine. ![]() Reading through the blurb again now, I guess that it offers a solid summary of the premise: Merrick Tremayne, who worked for the East India Company in China but suffered a lasting injury, is convinced to join another expedition. ![]()
